Wood Turning
In a wood turning class, you will learn how to pick and choose the right piece of timber for the furniture you want to make as well as describe a range of concepts, tools and techniques relevant to wood turning. You will make a range of templates and jigs using your own design in order to reproduce the desired object. You will learn various techniques that will help you decide what procedures to carry out.
Wood Finishing
This module helps you tidy up loose ends and varnish imperfections from your woodwork pieces. You will learn how to analyse a range of timber characteristics to see how you need to finish off your piece. For example, if you need to use grain or wood fillers, scrapers, hand planes or a sander. You will also be able to design finishing schedules on a lot of different types of timber, be it man-made or natural. You will also be able to spot and reduce any health and safety risks. After you have made your furniture you will be able to paint, decorate and varnish it so it looks exactly how you envisioned.
Furniture Making
In this class you be introduced to a range of power tools, and learn what part they play within furniture making, as well as learning about different finishing materials. You will draw out your designs in a couple of different ways before you actually start to construct your work. You will learn furniture production principles that will help you construct with a range of joining techniques.
Communications
The aim of Communications is to equip learners with the relevant knowledge, skills and competence to communicate verbally and non-verbally in everyday and work-related tasks, operating independently while under general direction. The module is broken down into 50% written work and 50% skills demonstration. A lot is covered in this module and it's easy and fun. During this module you will learn how to do many different tasks including, how to write a C.V., how to conduct yourself in an interview, listening skills, how to speak to people, how to read body language and most importantly the importance of empathy. Various tasks are also carried out such as a skills audit, oral presentation (topic of your choice), report writing, posters and a mock interview.
