Home Economics is a practical subject with three main areas:

 
"   Theory practical
"   Food studies
"   Practical Textiles.

Theory is the core of the subject overlapping the two practical areas and includes food and culinary skills, consumer studies, social and health studies, resource management and home studies and textiles.  In practical food studies dishes include basic baking and simple main meals and desserts.  In practical textiles two items are made during first and second year, a cushion cover and a pair of shorts for a young child.
The Junior Certificate Examination has three parts to it:
"   Practical Food Studies   35%
"   Project (Craft Work)                 15%
"   Written Exam                           50%
The craft item is made in school from the end of second year to Christmas of third year.  Written support work is also required with the craft item.
